This tour helps you to time travel back to when Berlin was the front line of the Cold War: It's a tour of spy stories, escapes over the Berlin Wall and art, architecture and everyday life in East vs West.
For the second half of the 20th century, Berlin was divided into a communist Eastern section, occupied by the Soviet Union, and a capitalist Western section, occupied by Britain, America and France. That made Berlin the front line of the Cold War. It was the city in which the two competing ideologies, communism and capitalism, and the two nuclear armed superpowers, the US and the Soviet Union, unhappily coexisted just metres away from each other divded by the Berlin Wall. This is my personal favourite era to talk about. The story is nowhere near as simple nor as one-sided as it is usually portrayed in history books and spy movies. East Germany existed for 40 years and since it only collapsed in 1990, it remains the origin story of millions of Germans today. We’ll see some original Berlin Wall, whether the painted East Side Gallery or the piece with the reconstructed Death Strip is your choice. We’ll also see some of the showcase architecture and art from East Germany like the former State Council building of the government or the parade street Karl Marx Allee. We'll also see some sites of escapes and tense, Cold War moments. Guests can request to see Checkpoint Charlie and or the location where the Berlin Wall fell. Our itinerary will be personally curated based on your preferences.
